Darlingtonia californica, commonly known as Cobra Plants or Cobra Lilies, is the only member of the family of pitcher plants native to the west coast of the United States. Although colonies exist up as far north as British Columbia, it's native range is from parts of northern California and southern Oregon. Medium rooted divisions, shipped with roots wrapped with moist sphagnum moss for protection.
Cultivation
While Cobra Plants can be easy to grow, our main challenge is in keeping their roots cool. In the wild they prefer to grow where water is flowing or seeping over their roots. Some horticulturists maintain that water flowing over their roots is of even higher importance than cool temperatures. We grow healthy plants outdoors in the Seattle area. We always sit them in trays of water, and pour water through the pots daily. During the hottest days of the summer, when temperatures outdoors reach the upper 80s or greater ice cubes are added to the water and top of the soil surface.
